Leaders at Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google have discussed creating a new AI industry standards body while publicly urging a slowdown in how fast frontier models advance, The Washington Post and CNN reported Monday.<\/p>\n
The catalyst for the private talks, people familiar with the matter told CNN, was a July essay by Google DeepMind founder Demis Hassabis proposing a U.S.-led standards body modeled on FINRA that would test advanced models before deployment as a public-private partnership. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei\u2019s weekend essay calling for companies to \u201cpace the frontier\u201d drew rare public backing from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk. In a Monday post, Altman said OpenAI \u201cwelcomes a federal framework that sets consistent safety requirements for frontier AI,\u201d warned of losing \u201ccontrol of the future to AI,\u201d and stressed that pacing \u201cdoes not mean stopping.\u201d<\/p>\n
AI-linked stocks fell Monday as investors digested the comments: SoftBank dropped sharply overseas, while U.S. premarket moves included Micron around \u22125%, Intel nearly \u22126%, and Nvidia more than \u22122%, CNBC reported. President Donald Trump dismissed the slowdown call Sunday, saying it would jeopardize America\u2019s lead over China; China\u2019s Foreign Ministry on Monday called the CEOs\u2019 comments \u201cfearmongering.\u201d<\/p>\n
