Researchers in Sweden built an <strong>\u201cAI scientist\u201d<\/strong> that can generate hypotheses, design experiments, run them on laboratory robots, and interpret the results with minimal human input, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/2026\/10\/02\/swedish-researchers-create-an-ai-scientist-that-designs-and-runs-its-own-experiments\">Euronews<\/a> reported Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The closed-loop system stitches together multiple large language models, big databases, and physical robotics. It mined roughly <strong>60,000<\/strong> phenotypical, physiological, and metabolic relations for baker\u2019s yeast (<em>S. cerevisiae<\/em>), then formed nearly <strong>2,000 testable predictions<\/strong> about how nutrients affect cell growth and stress resistance \u2014 converting winners into machine-readable instructions for lab gear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is too much information for a human to analyse, but our AI scientist could identify promising biological questions\u2026 and iteratively refine its understanding based on new evidence,\u201d said Chalmers University researcher <strong>Ievgeniia Tiukova<\/strong>. Senior author <strong>Ross King<\/strong> of the University of Gothenburg said such systems will collaborate with humans to accelerate biology, medicine, and biotech \u2014 while humans still set priorities, context, and ethics.<\/p>\n<p>Automation pitch, meet the reproducibility crisis. The team says AI labs can cut human bias and protocol drift \u2014 but WHO is already publishing governance guidance for AI-enabled health research. The robots are learning the scientific method.
