U.S. employers added only <strong>29,000<\/strong> jobs in September \u2014 far below the <strong>~84,000<\/strong> Wall Street expected \u2014 while the unemployment rate edged up to <strong>4.2%<\/strong>, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/10\/02\/jobs-report-september-2026.html\">CNBC<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/10\/02\/nx-s1-5989140\/jobs-labor-wages-federal-reserve\">NPR<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>Revisions made the soft patch look worse: August was cut to <strong>+133,000<\/strong> and July flipped to a <strong>\u221210,000<\/strong> loss \u2014 <strong>60,000<\/strong> fewer jobs than previously counted. Average hourly earnings rose just <strong>0.1%<\/strong> on the month and <strong>3.0%<\/strong> year over year, the slowest annual wage gain since May 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Markets read it as a rate-hike pause signal. CME FedWatch odds that the Fed holds at its Oct. 27\u201328 meeting jumped to about <strong>83%<\/strong>. Jefferies\u2019 Thomas Simons called the print \u201cthe nail in the coffin for an October hike.\u201d Gains clustered in health care (<strong>+17,000<\/strong>), construction (<strong>+11,000<\/strong>), and manufacturing (<strong>+9,000<\/strong>); government employment fell <strong>17,000<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The household survey told a different story \u2014 employment up <strong>406,000<\/strong> as the labor force swelled <strong>485,000<\/strong> and participation hit <strong>61.8%<\/strong> \u2014 but the establishment tally still landed as Friday\u2019s gut-punch number.
