The Energy Department\u2019s Office of Energy Dominance Financing announced Monday a <strong>conditional loan commitment of up to $4.2 billion<\/strong> to finance uprates and modernization across <strong>Vistra\u2019s<\/strong> nuclear fleet in Pennsylvania and Ohio, per the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/articles\/energy-department-announces-42-billion-investment-boost-nuclear-power-and-help-lower\">DOE announcement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The targets: <strong>Beaver Valley<\/strong> in Pennsylvania and <strong>Davis-Besse<\/strong> and <strong>Perry<\/strong> in Ohio. DOE says the work will add <strong>433 megawatts<\/strong> of new nuclear capacity, preserve <strong>nearly 4 gigawatts<\/strong> of baseload power \u2014 enough for more than 3 million homes \u2014 support about <strong>3,000 project jobs<\/strong>, and keep the plants running <strong>20 years beyond their existing licenses<\/strong>. The deal even carries an option to finance future uprates at Vistra\u2019s Comanche Peak plant in Texas.<\/p>\n<p>Energy Secretary <strong>Chris Wright<\/strong> brought the show to the Perry plant east of Cleveland, <a href=\"https:\/\/abc6onyourside.com\/news\/local\/us-energy-secretary-visits-ohio-to-announce-42b-in-nuclear-power-investments-policy-trump-donald-president-plan-power-energy-electricity-bills\">ABC6\/WSYX<\/a> reported. \u201cBy getting more power out of the nuclear plants we already have, we can deliver more affordable, reliable, around-the-clock energy for American families and businesses,\u201d Wright said.<\/p>\n<p>Now the fine print: \u201cconditional\u201d means exactly that. Vistra must clear technical, legal, environmental and financial conditions before DOE signs final documents and funds a dime. And the payoff is slow \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.powermag.com\/vistra-in-line-for-doe-loan-package-to-uprate-nuclear-plants-in-ohio-and-pennsylvania\/\">POWER magazine<\/a> reports Vistra\u2019s own NRC timeline has Perry filing its big uprate in the second half of 2029 and reaching higher power in 2031, with Davis-Besse last in line around 2034.<\/p>\n<p>Who\u2019s buying the juice? Meta. POWER notes Vistra signed 20-year power deals with the hyperscaler in January covering those same <strong>433 MW<\/strong> of uprate capacity plus existing Perry and Davis-Besse output \u2014 <strong>2,609 MW<\/strong> in all.
