President <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong> signed an executive order Monday night to temporarily allow off-road \u201cdyed\u201d diesel for highway use and defer the federal excise tax on it, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/fact-sheets\/2026\/10\/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-promotes-diesel-affordability\/\">White House fact sheet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Trump unveiled it at a rally in Nebraska, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/business\/energy\/aiming-fuel-costs-trump-opens-tax-exempt-red-dye-diesel-rcna601748\">NBC News<\/a> reports: \u201cTonight I\u2019m going to sign a historic executive order to officially waive the off-road requirement and allow anyone to purchase tax-free red dye diesel for any reason.\u201d The White House claims it will save truckers <strong>over $100 per refill<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The fine print, straight from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2026\/10\/emergency-tax-relief-on-diesel-fuel\/\">order itself<\/a>: within <strong>five days<\/strong>, Treasury must decide whether relief is authorized under a federal tax-deadline relief statute (26 U.S.C. 7508A) and, if so, defer the tax on dyed diesel used on the road from <strong>Oct. 5 through Dec. 31, 2026<\/strong> \u2014 without penalties or interest \u2014 and have the IRS announce it won\u2019t impose dyed-fuel penalties for that period. Treasury is told only to \u201cexplore avenues, including legislation,\u201d to wipe out the deferred bill. States get a nudge, not a mandate: the White House will \u201cencourage\u201d them to adopt matching policies.<\/p>\n<p>Why now? Pain at the pump. NBC says diesel hit an all-time high of <strong>$6.52 a gallon<\/strong> on Sept. 22, per AAA, and is up <strong>more than 70%<\/strong> since the Iran war began Feb. 28 \u2014 with Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian refineries pushing the Kremlin to ban diesel exports. Voters in both parties are citing gas prices and the cost of living as top midterm issues.<\/p>\n<p>Wall Street noticed: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/10\/06\/5-things-to-know-before-the-stock-market-opens.html\">CNBC<\/a> says stock futures rose Tuesday morning as Treasury yields and oil prices both dropped.
