Kenya confirmed its <strong>first Ebola case \u2014 and first Ebola death<\/strong> on Tuesday, Health Cabinet Secretary <strong>Aden Duale<\/strong> announced, as the outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo keeps spreading, <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.com\/International\/kenya-records-1st-ebola-death-after-man-travels\/story?id=137032067\">ABC News<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p>The patient was a <strong>40-year-old<\/strong> Kenyan man who had lived in the DRC for seven years and traveled from Buta in the country\u2019s northwest. After falling ill about a month ago and being treated at several DRC hospitals, he went by road to Kampala, Uganda, then flew a Jambo Jet flight into Nairobi on <strong>Oct. 3<\/strong>. He was isolated, tested positive for <strong>Bundibugyo virus<\/strong> \u2014 a rare Ebola variant behind the DRC outbreak, for which there are no vaccines and no treatments, per ABC \u2014 and died Monday evening.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the chilling part: he passed through public health screening at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Kenya\u2019s health director general Dr. Patrick Amoth said medication \u201cto lower your temperature\u201d could mask symptoms, adding: \u201cWe believe that he knew that he was unwell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now the hunt: officials have identified <strong>28 contacts<\/strong>, including family and health workers, and are trying to reach <strong>23 more passengers and four crew<\/strong> from his flight. \u201cI wish to assure the public not to panic as all systems are in place to mitigate the spread of the disease,\u201d Duale said.
