Poetry just won the whole thing. Canadian poet, essayist and translator Anne Carson<\/strong> has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature<\/strong>, the Swedish Academy announced Thursday, \u201cfor her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature,\u201d according to the official press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Carson, 76<\/strong>, is famous for refusing to stay in one lane. Autobiography of Red<\/em> is a novel in verse spun from fragments of a Greek myth; The Beauty of the Husband<\/em> tells the story of a marriage in 29 tangos, NPR<\/a> notes. Her other notable works include The Glass Essay<\/em>, Nox<\/em>, Float<\/em> and Eros the Bittersweet<\/em>. She has also translated ancient Greek literature and taught classics for more than 30 years, the BBC<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n

How did she take the news? Swedish Academy permanent secretary Ingrid Carlberg said she reached Carson by phone shortly before the announcement. Carson told her she was in Iceland, \u201cwhere she is listening to the wind,\u201d Carlberg said. \u201cShe was taken by surprise but very happy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nobel committee chair Anders Olsson praised the way Carson has \u201cbroken away from lyrical poetry bound to the narrative self.\u201d The prize is worth 12 million Swedish kronor<\/strong> \u2014 about $1.2 million, per the BBC.<\/p>\n

She joins a recent run of laureates that includes Hungary\u2019s L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Krasznahorkai, South Korea\u2019s Han Kang and Norway\u2019s Jon Fosse. Not bad for a writer who once told NPR that with every sentence, there is \u201cthat attempt to make something new happen inside.\u201d<\/p>\n
