Peace just got a gavel. The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize<\/strong> to South African jurist Navanethem \u201cNavi\u201d Pillay<\/strong> \u201cfor her efforts to promote peace and international law,\u201d the official press release<\/a> said Friday \u2014 the 125th<\/strong> anniversary of the Peace Prize.<\/p>\n

Pillay, 85<\/strong>, has spent a career making war crimes stick. The committee says she was instrumental in ensuring that war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide are prosecuted. Born of Indian Tamil origin under apartheid in Durban, she defended Nelson Mandela and other anti-apartheid figures, then sat on South Africa\u2019s High Court, the ICTR<\/strong> for Rwanda, the ICC<\/strong>, served as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, and now sits as an ICJ judge on the Myanmar genocide case, per NobelPrize.org and Al Jazeera<\/a>.<\/p>\n

At the Rwanda tribunal, her influence helped establish that rape and sexual violence can constitute a crime against humanity and genocide \u2014 and she was central when a defendant first faced genocide-incitement charges based on propaganda alone, the committee notes. Chair J\u00f8rgen Watne Frydnes<\/strong> called her \u201cone of the great defenders of international legal principles in our time,\u201d CBC<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n

The purse is 12 million Swedish kronor<\/strong> \u2014 about $1.2 million<\/strong>, Al Jazeera says. The committee received 287 nominations<\/strong>. Frydnes told CBC the committee had not yet reached Pillay when the award was announced; she later told reporters she still wanted to \u201cverify,\u201d being a lawyer and a judge.<\/p>\n

In a week stuffed with Nobels, this one is a reminder that treaties and tribunals are supposed to beat missiles and mobs. Whether the world is listening is another story.<\/p>\n
