SpaceX reached a definitive agreement Thursday to acquire Grain Management\u2019s nationwide <strong>800 MHz<\/strong> spectrum portfolio so Starlink Mobile can operate as a major U.S. mobile carrier, <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/spacex-starlink-mobile-carrier-spectrum-grain-management-100926\">Quartz<\/a> reports, citing the company and Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>The deal covers licenses for up to <strong>14 MHz of paired<\/strong> spectrum in the 800 MHz band, subject to <strong>FCC approval<\/strong> and customary closing conditions. SpaceX already leans on <strong>2 GHz mid-band<\/strong> for capacity; low-band is the wall-puncher \u2014 the signal that sneaks through buildings and obstacles. Elon Musk called it a \u201cvery big deal\u201d on X.<\/p>\n<p>Grain picked up that 800 MHz stash from T-Mobile in August 2026 (cash plus Grain\u2019s 600 MHz licenses), aligning with an FCC order from July 2026. After the SpaceX news hit, after-hours trading dinged the incumbents: <strong>AT&amp;T \u22123.6%<\/strong>, <strong>Verizon \u22123%<\/strong>, <strong>T-Mobile \u22122.7%<\/strong>, Quartz says.<\/p>\n<p>This is not SpaceX\u2019s first spectrum shopping spree. It previously paid roughly <strong>$17 billion<\/strong> for EchoStar wireless licenses, plus a <strong>$2.6 billion<\/strong> follow-on. On the August 2026 earnings call, President Gwynne Shotwell said the company plans terrestrial towers and small cells on top of the satellite network. As of June 30, Starlink claimed <strong>12 million subscribers<\/strong> across <strong>205 countries<\/strong>. No launch date yet for services that depend on the new low-band licenses \u2014 regulators still have to stamp the deal, Quartz notes via CNBC.<\/p>\n<p>Translation: the satellite internet company just bought another piece of the phone business.
