Emeryville nonprofit Pioneer Labs says it engineered a microbe, sPL.001, that can live on chemically accurate simulated Martian dirt, water and air and manufacture bioplastics useful for habitats, Space.com reports.

CEO Erika DeBenedictis frames it as a first step toward terraforming: “On Mars, nature will do the same jobs for us that she does on Earth — create fertile soil, shelter, oxygen and food.” The catch on the real Red Planet is toxic soil — perchlorates and nasty salts — so prior plans rinsed poisons, hauled fertilizer, or skipped dirt entirely. Pioneer argues those don’t scale.

They started with Earth microbes that already make bioplastics, then evolved them toward Mars-like conditions until growth took. The bug still needs a stirred, heated bioreactor (protection from cold, radiation, and thin air), a processed nitrogen feed as acetate (Martian air is too dilute), and it is not photosynthetic. Pioneer says those limits mean it should not survive if it ever escapes outdoors — a pitch for keeping Mars contamination risk low.

A companion estimate claims the microbe approach could pack what you need to build a small Martian city onto a single rocket. Caveat from DeBenedictis herself: simulated Mars isn’t actual Mars; the real exam is real regolith. Outside scientists are curious anyway — University of Reading’s Samuel McKee called accidental runaway terraforming unlikely for a tank-bound bug, and said similar work could help extreme habitats and climate work on Earth.

Translation: the first “Martian” employee might be a microbe on payroll for plastic, not poetry.

Sources: Space.com

Pioneer Labs evolved sPL.001 to live on simulated Martian dirt, water and air and spit out bioplastics — a contained bioreactor bug pitched as a first terraforming building block that (they say) can’t go feral outside the tank

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[1

post-538","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
