Almost nobody\u2019s paying. <strong>a16z<\/strong>\u2019s 7th edition of the Top 100 Gen AI Consumer Apps finds nearly half of U.S. consumers report using AI \u2014 but only <strong>25%<\/strong> daily \u2014 and as of August just <strong>4.5%<\/strong> of eligible U.S. consumers in the YipitData e-receipt panel had an active paid personal subscription to at least one of ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude, <a href=\"https:\/\/a16z.com\/100-gen-ai-apps-7\/\">a16z<\/a>\u2019s Olivia Moore wrote Oct. 5, 2026. That\u2019s up from <strong>2.1%<\/strong> a year earlier.<\/p>\n<p>The whales are wild: the <strong>top 1%<\/strong> of payers average <strong>$903\/month<\/strong> on consumer cards and account for <strong>19.5%<\/strong> of observed consumer AI spend \u2014 more than the bottom <strong>50%<\/strong> combined (<strong>16.6%<\/strong>). The median payer? Just <strong>$25\/month<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ChatGPT<\/strong> still leads traffic and spend, with roughly <strong>3\u00d7<\/strong> more U.S. consumer paid subscribers than Claude or Gemini. Only <strong>13%<\/strong> of people who pay for one AI product pay for another.<\/p>\n<p>a16z flags personal agents \u2014 Instinct, Muse, Dots, Grok Bot \u2014 as the next monetization path, via transactions rather than seats alone.
