Price and a real ship date? Still missing.

Nine years. Five-figure deposits. A demo that got scrubbed on October 1. And Thursday night, at a SpaceX rocket test site in McGregor, Texas, Tesla’s next-generation Roadster finally rolled out — then drove upside down, flew, and landed.

The livestream kicked off at 7:55pm CT with Elon Musk, design chief Franz von Holzhausen and vehicle engineering VP Lars Moravy on stage. Reuters reports the two-seater, built with SpaceX, drove upside down on a ramp using a suction system, then turned in the air and landed on built-in thrusters. The Verge says Tesla’s on-screen timer clocked 0-60 mph in 0.81 seconds, and Engadget’s live blog says the thruster car did barrel rolls over a Tesla Semi. The whole show ran under 30 minutes.

Three flavors, one catch. After the stream, Tesla’s site and X account laid out the lineup, per Electrek and Reuters:

Performance — road car, two seats, active aero plus a “multi-mode suction system.” Under 1.6 seconds to 60. Reservation: $50,000.

Thrust — adds rear cold-gas thrusters. Under 0.9 seconds to 60. Reservation: $250,000.

Rocket — one seat, thrusters all around for a “full flight system,” over 230 mph. Invite only, and Tesla’s own page says it isn’t approved for public roads.

Tesla says the design moved on from the 2017 car toward its Cybertruck and Cybercab look, inspired by the SR-71 and F-35. In Track Mode the wings are driven by the same actuators built for the Optimus robot, with downforce Tesla claims is “approaching F1 levels.” Electrek reports carbon-fiber pressure tanks are stuffed into every spare void to feed the thrusters, and range is quoted at over 300 miles.

What’s still missing: a price. No trim was priced, and Musk’s only timing was production in 2028. That’s a long way from the 2017 pitch of 620 miles of range, a 250-plus mph top speed, four seats and deliveries in 2020. Reuters notes it isn’t clear how the flying and wall-sticking tricks would ever be legal on public roads, and CNBC says the car isn’t expected to move Tesla’s numbers much.

Wall Street didn’t shrug, though. Tesla stock closed Thursday at $362.44 and was trading near $372.72 after hours at 9:46pm CT, up roughly 2.8%.

Tesla promised a show. It delivered one. Now let’s see a price tag and a car in a driveway.

Sources: Reuters via Investing.com — Tesla unveils Roadster with SpaceX thrusters · The Verge — The Roadster flew and hit 60 in under a second · Electrek — Tesla unveils Cyberfied new Roadster · CNBC — Tesla reveals next-gen Roadster · Engadget — Roadster reveal live blog · Tesla on X — Roadster

Featured image: AI-generated editorial illustration by Bugle Blast.

Nine years late, the hypercar drove upside down, hopped a Semi on thrusters and clocked 0-60 in 0.81 seconds.
