Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez conceded authorities “lost control” in major cities over the weekend, and he offered his resignation. President Emmanuel Macron refused it, France 24 reported.

The numbers are ugly. More than half a million people marched across France on Saturday, according to the Interior Ministry, and nearly 2,400 were arrested. Almost 1,000 police officers and firefighters were injured, NBC News reported. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu put the count at about 3,000 businesses looted or vandalized, and said “no one was killed and that is a miracle.”

The image everyone is talking about: the 19th-century town hall in Limoges burned until its spire collapsed, while people below cheered on video. In Lyon a tourist office was torched. City halls in Marseille, Lille and Angers were broken into, Nuñez said. Clashes flared again Sunday at Paris’s Place de la République.

Monday’s answer from the government: Lecornu asked regional prefects to impose “partial” and “localised” curfews in some cities starting Monday evening. He ruled out a curfew covering all of Paris. Marseille banned public gatherings for most of the day.

How it started matters. High school students first hit the streets last month over crumbling classrooms and too few teachers. Unions and farmers piled in over the soaring cost of living and gas prices. Macron blamed far-left “troublemakers” for the violence while acknowledging the protesters’ concerns. Far-right hopeful Marine Le Pen, who leads the polls ahead of April’s presidential vote, called his government “exhausted, disoriented.” And the Yellow Vest movement is already calling for another round of protests on Saturday.

Sources: NBC News — France moves to impose curfews as it reels from worst violence in years (Oct. 19, 2026) · France 24 — French PM Lecornu calls for ‘partial curfews’ in cities hit by riots and looting (Oct. 19, 2026) · AP — France’s prime minister calls for localized curfews (Oct. 19, 2026)

Featured image: AI-generated editorial illustration by Bugle Blast.

A 19th-century city hall went up in flames, nearly 2,400 were arrested, and now Paris wants curfews

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[1

post-667","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
