The next it was on top of them. A grass fire tore through Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta on Saturday afternoon, killing four service members and sending 39 people to hospital, 19 of them in critical condition, the BBC reported.

Maj.-Gen. Wade Rutland, commander of 1st Canadian Division, said the blaze ignited on a training range about a kilometre away, then “uncommonly strong winds caused it to spread rapidly” toward soldiers on exercises. “It is not normal for a fire to move a kilometre in 30 to 60 seconds,” he said.

Officials identified the dead as Sgt. Morgan Wong, Pte. Shaun Farrell, Pte. Aidan Goulding and Pte. Hayden Lykkemark. Many of the injured suffered severe burns. Edmonton’s Royal Alexandra Hospital declared a code orange mass-casualty response, and Alberta’s health service says the emergency effort ran 10 hours with 22 ambulances and eight aircraft.

Prime Minister Mark Carney called it one of the worst peacetime tragedies for Canada’s forces on home soil. The cause is still under investigation. Early local reports pointed to a gas main hit during live fire, but the military says investigators don’t believe oil or gas infrastructure caused any explosions, and National Defence says there are no indications of terrorism.

The base, one of the Canadian Army’s busiest training sites, sits roughly 120 miles from Edmonton. Defence Minister David McGuinty says Albertans are lining up to give blood.

Sources: BBC — What we know so far about deadly fire at Canadian military base (Oct. 19, 2026) · National Defence Canada — Four Canadian Armed Forces members killed during training in CFB Wainwright (Oct. 2026) · Prime Minister of Canada — Remarks following the tragedy at CFB Wainwright (Oct. 18, 2026)

Featured image: AI-generated editorial illustration by Bugle Blast.

It crossed a kilometre in 30 to 60 seconds at CFB Wainwright, and 19 people are still critical

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[1

post-669","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
