A retired decorator from <strong>Woking<\/strong>, England, is a millionaire after his Pok\u00e9mon card collection sold for <strong>\u00a31.56 million<\/strong> at auction, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cvp8gy1zwxxwo\">BBC<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>He had no idea the cards were worth anything until he read in his local paper about one card fetching more than \u00a36,000. The collection, <strong>42 sets<\/strong> sealed in mint condition in custom binders, had sat in his attic for <strong>15 years<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Back in the late 1990s his son was swapping cards at school. Dad thought they \u201clooked nice\u201d and might be a good investment, and bought some complete sets from a seller in <strong>Malaysia on eBay<\/strong>. \u201cHe had his own cards, but he never got to touch these, I\u2019m glad to say,\u201d the man, who asked not to be named, told the BBC.<\/p>\n<p>Get this: one set that cost him <strong>\u00a3300<\/strong> sold for <strong>\u00a375,000<\/strong>. The top lot, a Legendary Collection Complete Master Set with a near-mint <strong>Charizard<\/strong>, was estimated at \u00a315,000 to \u00a320,000 and went for <strong>\u00a3100,000<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Surrey auction house <strong>Ewbank\u2019s<\/strong> says it\u2019s the UK\u2019s most valuable trading card auction ever, beating a \u00a3872,000 sale in London on 9 October, and may be a European record. Andrew Ewbank, who ran the sale himself, told bidders he was \u201cgoing for a lie down\u201d afterwards.
