French authorities say they\u2019ve detected the first known human case of the <strong>Shamonda virus<\/strong>, in a patient who <strong>died in early October<\/strong>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c6reyx1d9ge9o\">BBC<\/a> reported Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Shamonda mostly hits <strong>cattle<\/strong>, spread by infected <strong>midges<\/strong>, and has turned up in sheep, goats, alpacas and horses. In cows it causes fever, diarrhoea and poor milk production. Human infections? Previously unheard of. \u201cUntil now, the Shamonda virus was considered non-transmissible to humans,\u201d France\u2019s health and agriculture ministries said, despite decades of the virus circulating in Africa and Asia.<\/p>\n<p>Officials think the patient caught it from a midge bite in <strong>eastern France<\/strong>, where animal cases were first found in the spring. The person was being treated for a serious illness at a hospital in <strong>Lyon<\/strong> and had neurological complications \u201cvery likely linked\u201d to the virus, based on early findings.<\/p>\n<p>Now the calm-down part: health officials call it an \u201cexceptional case in a severely immunocompromised patient\u201d and say there is <strong>currently no risk to the public<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>But the bug is on the move. Europe\u2019s first animal cases showed up in late July, and it has since been found in farm animals in <strong>Ireland, Germany, Italy, Spain and Jersey<\/strong>.
