Serbia\u2019s long-standing leader <strong>Aleksandar Vu\u010di\u0107<\/strong> has admitted defeat to a student-led protest movement in snap parliamentary elections, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cw5yn3xlprpmo\">BBC<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is clear we have lost these elections,\u201d the right-wing populist said as he conceded. With 96% of polling stations counted, Serbia\u2019s election commission said the <strong>Student List<\/strong> had won <strong>2.24 million<\/strong> votes to <strong>1.67 million<\/strong> for his Serbian Progressive Party (SNS). Preliminary figures put the students on <strong>52.65%<\/strong> and the SNS on <strong>39.2%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The movement was formed less than two years ago after the collapse of a canopy in front of <strong>Novi Sad<\/strong> station killed <strong>16<\/strong> people, a disaster blamed on corruption and negligence. Vu\u010di\u0107 called the snap vote after two years of protests. The SNS has been in power since 2012, and Vu\u010di\u0107 and the party have repeatedly denied corruption.<\/p>\n<p>Belgrade, Novi Sad and other cities erupted with dancing, chanting, honking and fireworks. \u201cSerbia is free,\u201d one student told the BBC. \u201cIt\u2019s a miracle.\u201d Lead candidate <strong>Ilija Srdanovi\u0107<\/strong> said: \u201cThis will be a free state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Student List has no obvious leaders and fielded doctors, actors, academics and sports figures for the 250-seat parliament.
