A spat among mathematicians is fuelling fears that AI could undermine trust in science itself, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c6gelgxjwzdzo\">BBC<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p>Last month OpenAI said its AI agents had solved a major unsolved problem tied to the famous <strong>Navier\u2013Stokes equations<\/strong>, cracking it in <strong>88 hours<\/strong>. The body that runs a prize for the problem said it had \u201capparently been settled,\u201d but that its review would take time.<\/p>\n<p>Hours before the announcement, NYU mathematician <strong>Tristan Buckmaster<\/strong> went public with concerns. He and Levent Alp\u00f6ge, who works by day at rival Anthropic, had been chasing the same goal and kept their drafts in OpenAI&#8217;s coding tool, Codex. Buckmaster asked whether that work could have fed OpenAI&#8217;s, while stressing he was \u201cnot accusing anyone of anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>OpenAI says nobody there, \u201chuman or AI,\u201d saw the other team&#8217;s work before it was published. It first said it couldn&#8217;t \u201crule out\u201d that anonymised product data helped its models, then said days later that Buckmaster&#8217;s Codex prompts \u201ccould not have influenced the system in any way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bigger worry is the flood of AI in research.
