The death toll from Sunday’s building collapse in south Delhi’s Satya Niketan rose to seven on Monday as rescue teams worked a second day through the wreckage of a multi-storey boys’ paying-guest hostel near Delhi University’s South Campus.<\/p>\n
Twelve people were pulled from the debris and taken to AIIMS, where three were listed in critical condition. The roughly five-storey building collapsed around 1:30 p.m. Sunday while basement repair work was underway; locals alleged waterlogging may have weakened the structure.<\/p>\n
Delhi Police arrested building owner Hariram in Bhiwadi, Rajasthan, and registered charges including culpable homicide and endangering safety. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the site again Monday, ordered a magisterial inquiry, and pushed suspensions: Municipal Corporation of Delhi South zone deputy commissioner Rakesh Kumar and four engineers were placed under suspension pending proceedings. Gupta also directed officials to seal all five-storey structures in the city.<\/p>\n
