CERN&#8217;s LHCb collaboration announced evidence for the ultra-rare decay of a B<sub>d<\/sub> meson into a pair of muons \u2014 a process predicted about once in <strong>ten billion<\/strong> beauty-particle decays \u2014 becoming the first experiment to claim that evidence alone, <a href=\"https:\/\/home.cern\/lhcb-finds-evidence-of-one-in-ten-billion-particle-decay\/\">CERN<\/a> said Nov. 3.<\/p>\n<p>Run-3 data from 2024\u20132025 reached <strong>3.0 standard deviations<\/strong>; combining with 2011\u20132018 data pushed significance to <strong>3.2\u03c3<\/strong> \u2014 past the usual &#8220;evidence&#8221; line, still short of the <strong>5\u03c3<\/strong> discovery bar. The same analysis delivered the world&#8217;s most precise measurements of the related (and still rare) B<sub>s<\/sub> \u2192 \u03bc\u207a\u03bc\u207b decay. B<sub>d<\/sub> \u2192 \u03bc\u207a\u03bc\u207b is predicted roughly <strong>30 times<\/strong> rarer than that B<sub>s<\/sub> channel.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Physicists have been chasing this decay for more than forty years,&#8221; analysis co-lead Marco Santimaria said.
