Gov. Gavin Newsom announced he is commuting all <strong>548<\/strong> California death sentences to life without possibility of parole, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cqrkyyd2j8mvo\">BBC News<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/california-death-row-newsom-commute-sentences-dd8a949162b3325edfaa381952ff2466\">AP<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2026\/11\/05\/governor-newsom-releases-letter-to-california-on-the-death-penalty\/\">Governor\u2019s Office<\/a> reported Nov. 5.<\/p>\n<p>This does <strong>not<\/strong> release anyone, pardon them, or change convictions or restitution \u2014 and it is <strong>not<\/strong> parole-eligible. &#8220;I firmly believe that state-sanctioned killing is incompatible with California&#8217;s values, undermines the foundations of our legal system and diminishes each of us,&#8221; Newsom wrote. Also: &#8220;We can now let these offenders die in obscurity while we forever remember and honour the victims.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>California\u2019s last execution was <strong>Jan. 17, 2006<\/strong>; Newsom imposed a moratorium in <strong>2019<\/strong>. The California Supreme Court must approve commutations for people twice convicted of felonies (the majority of cases) \u2014 at least <strong>4 of 7<\/strong> justices, CalMatters via BBC reported.<\/p>\n<p>Newsom is term-limited; Xavier Becerra is projected to take over after the midterms.
