The AI chip king just wrote a science check with a lot of zeros. Nvidia announced commitments valued at $1 billion over five years to build U.S. capacity in quantum computing, healthcare, and energy-security R&D, Quartz reports — unveiled Thursday at the Washington “Science: A New Golden Age” event tied to the Trump administration’s Genesis Mission.
Where the money goes, in three buckets Nvidia named but did not split: higher-education research institutions, U.S. quantum computing development, and cloud providers that serve U.S. government mission needs. CEO Jensen Huang called Genesis Mission “a new golden age of American discovery” and said the spend puts “advanced Super Intelligence in the hands of America’s scientists” for medicine, energy, and materials breakthroughs.
Nvidia also said it is in several phase-2 Genesis Mission awards spanning quantum, fusion energy, accelerator design, and microelectronics. The company already partners with the Energy Department on big iron — including what it calls the department’s largest science supercomputer at Argonne — plus more systems at Argonne and Los Alamos.
On quantum, Nvidia is selling the stack around the fridge, not the fridge itself: software and infrastructure (including April’s open-source Ising models for calibration and error correction), not quantum processors. Translation: the GPU giant wants to be the pickaxe in the next gold rush — and it just bankrolled the claim with a billion-dollar headline.
