Someone wrapped a spy mic in toilet paper and jammed it into a USB port behind a TV in an OpenAI executive conference room. The Justice Department says that someone was an OpenAI engineer — and he is now under federal arrest.
Abdulrahman Alfozan, 35, a Saudi national employed as an engineer since July 2025, was arrested Oct. 9 and made his initial appearance in San Francisco federal court. Prosecutors charged him with using or endeavoring to use a device to intercept oral communications. Max exposure if convicted: five years, a $250,000 fine, then supervised release.
Per the DOJ complaint: OpenAI staff found the encrypted device on or about Sept. 30, installed about Sept. 28, stuffed into a TV USB port and concealed in toilet paper. CCTV put Alfozan near that exec room on multiple dates even though he had no authority to be in those meetings. On Oct. 5 he allegedly walked back in and peered behind the TV — then left a bag elsewhere with his wallet, ID, and a second similar recorder.
The room hosted “highly confidential” technical, commercial, and strategic talks — including government engagements. Before the plant, prosecutors say he queried productivity tools about leadership meeting rooms and buildings; a chatbot account tied to identifiers shared with his own asked how to build, customize, encrypt, and remotely access a continuous audio recorder — including prompts that matched the device’s custom header and MAC address.
OpenAI said it used its own AI models to help pin the plant on a specific employee, then fired him and called the FBI. FBI Director Kash Patel framed it as protecting American “super intelligence” tech. The investigation continues.
Toilet paper. A USB port. An exec room where the future gets planned. Silicon Valley just got a spy thriller with a bathroom aisle budget.
