UNCLE SAM JUST KICKED DEEPSEEK OFF THE GOVERNMENT’S COMPUTERS! | DHS banned the Chinese AI back in July and only told the rest of us on Monday

Washington just slammed the door on China’s favorite cheap AI. The Department of Homeland Security has banned all use of DeepSeek in civilian government agencies, plus any technology built with the help of its AI models, the BBC reported Monday.

That covers heavyweights like the Treasury, State and Justice departments. Agencies inside the Department of Defense are excluded from this order.

The kicker: the ban isn’t new. DHS made the order public on Monday, but it actually took effect at the end of July. And the notice didn’t spell out the exact security concerns.

The backdrop is plenty loud, though. White House tech lead Michael Kratsios wrote in an internal memo this year that “malicious exploitation” of American AI firms had been happening, mainly by rival firms in China. Anthropic and OpenAI have both claimed Chinese firms, including DeepSeek, essentially copied their models.

Why it matters outside the Beltway: DeepSeek is open source and dirt cheap to use. The company said it took about $6 million to train its debut model, versus roughly $100 million for OpenAI’s GPT-4. US companies including Snowflake, Vercel and OpenRouter build it into their offerings, and its newest version dropped just last week. DHS, DeepSeek and the Chinese embassy were contacted for comment, the BBC said.
