An Amazon Air cargo plane operated by North Carolina charter carrier 21 Air overshot a runway while landing at Miami International Airport on Sunday, killing five people and seriously injuring five more.
The Boeing 767-300, inbound from San Juan, Puerto Rico, crashed just before 14:00 local time, crossed a road beyond the runway, and struck vehicles on the ground. Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava confirmed the death toll Sunday evening; fire chief Raied Jadallah said three of the injured were in critical condition and that crews had to extricate people trapped in or under vehicles.
Officials say it is too early to name a cause. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating and planned a Monday news conference. Flight-tracking data cited by BBC reporting showed the aircraft still moving at about 112 knots as it left usable runway, with light thunderstorms and gusting winds in the area.
Amazon and 21 Air both said they are cooperating with investigators. Amazon corporate media director Kelly Nantel called the loss heartbreaking; 21 Air CEO Keith Winters offered condolences and said priorities were supporting those affected and assisting authorities.
The FAA temporarily grounded flights at the airport during one of the busiest U.S. travel weekends of the year.
