At Boston Arts Academy, a work friendship turned into a life-saving match. When math teacher Thomas Thermidor’s brother — a college sophomore with kidney failure — needed a donor, school custodian Andrew Allen stepped up without being asked, NBC Boston reported Oct. 2, 2026.
“He told me what was going on, and I just got a lightning bolt,” Allen said, adding he felt “convicted by the Holy Spirit to get the blood test to see if I was compatible.” He was. The transplant happened within a year. The Thermidor family said that without the donation, the wait could have been seven years or more.
On Friday, Allen was honored with colleagues for National Custodians Day, with Thermidor and his brother there in support. Nobody asked. He showed up anyway.
