At least 600,000 people across Ukraine woke up in the dark after deadly overnight Russian missile and drone strikes smashed energy infrastructure — and Kyiv says its Starlink lifeline got throttled at the worst possible moment.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said “critical” energy sites were hit in Kyiv, the capital region, and Kharkiv, days after President Trump claimed an “energy ceasefire” was in effect. Ukraine’s air force reported 39 ballistic and cruise missiles plus 128 drones overnight; four missiles and 115 drones were shot down. Al Jazeera, citing local officials and AFP/AP/Reuters, put the death toll at least nine nationwide, with hundreds of thousands still without power.
Moscow called it a “massive” strike on communications and energy facilities. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko warned of power disruptions and urged people to stay in shelters. DTEK, Ukraine’s largest private energy provider, reported emergency cuts across several Kyiv districts.
Then the satellite twist: Zelenskyy adviser Serhiy Beskrestnov said SpaceX imposed overnight speed limits on Starlink terminals — about 100 mph / 160 km/h — without warning Ukrainian forces. A Ukrainian defence ministry source told the BBC that once a vehicle or asset exceeds that threshold, the terminal loses connection, complicating interceptor drones, mid-strike missions, logistics, and recon. SpaceX has not publicly commented. Beskrestnov called the timing “related to the current political situation.”
Same movie, second night: ballistic missiles again struck Kyiv with little or no early partner warning. Zelenskyy heads to Downing Street Wednesday to press UK PM Andy Burnham for faster air-defence help. Trump’s “Do not break it!” energy ceasefire? The grid didn’t get the memo.
