Your AI shopping butler is about to need a hall pass. American Express rolled out an Intent Intelligence Framework meant to capture and authenticate what you actually told an agent to buy — before the bot finishes checkout, TechCrunch reported Oct. 13.

Flow: a Create Intent API locks merchant, budget, and product preferences; you authenticate and sign off; Amex mints an Intent ID plus a Proof of Intent Token. That token unlocks a secure digital payment credential — not your real card number — for the agent to use at checkout.

Why bother? LLMs are nondeterministic. Ask for white Nike size 9s and the agent might try Adidas. Amex says pulling intent earlier can block the mismatch before the charge. VP Hannah Bozian told TechCrunch the company hasn’t seen a spike in agentic disputes yet — it’s building ahead of scale.

Survey fuel: in Amex’s Trendex report, 66% of U.S. consumers said they’re likely to use AI agents to hunt the best price, and 61% for product recommendations over the next year. The framework plugs into Amex’s ACE Developer Toolkit launched in April.

Autonomous paper-towel reorders are coming. Amex wants the leash on the card first.
