The death toll from Sunday’s building collapse in south Delhi’s Satya Niketan rose to seven on Monday as rescue teams worked a second day through the wreckage of a multi-storey boys’ paying-guest hostel near Delhi University’s South Campus.
Twelve people were pulled from the debris and taken to AIIMS, where three were listed in critical condition. The roughly five-storey building collapsed around 1:30 p.m. Sunday while basement repair work was underway; locals alleged waterlogging may have weakened the structure.
Delhi Police arrested building owner Hariram in Bhiwadi, Rajasthan, and registered charges including culpable homicide and endangering safety. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the site again Monday, ordered a magisterial inquiry, and pushed suspensions: Municipal Corporation of Delhi South zone deputy commissioner Rakesh Kumar and four engineers were placed under suspension pending proceedings. Gupta also directed officials to seal all five-storey structures in the city.
