Astronomers using the Hubble Space Telescope have spotted a ten-sided polygonal atmospheric structure near Saturn’s south pole — a decagon that joins the gas giant’s famous hexagon at the north pole, first observed decades ago.

The discovery was recently published in the journal Science Advances, with imagery credited through the Space Telescope Science Institute. Saturn’s north-polar hexagon has puzzled scientists for more than forty years; a matching-style geometric jet stream at the opposite pole raises fresh questions about how stable polygonal storms form in fast-spinning atmospheres.
