Everybody’s using AI. Almost nobody’s paying. a16z’s 7th edition of the Top 100 Gen AI Consumer Apps finds nearly half of U.S. consumers report using AI — but only 25% daily — and as of August just 4.5% of eligible U.S. consumers in the YipitData e-receipt panel had an active paid personal subscription to at least one of ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude, a16z’s Olivia Moore wrote Oct. 5, 2026. That’s up from 2.1% a year earlier.
The whales are wild: the top 1% of payers average $903/month on consumer cards and account for 19.5% of observed consumer AI spend — more than the bottom 50% combined (16.6%). The median payer? Just $25/month.
ChatGPT still leads traffic and spend, with roughly 3× more U.S. consumer paid subscribers than Claude or Gemini. Only 13% of people who pay for one AI product pay for another.
a16z flags personal agents — Instinct, Muse, Dots, Grok Bot — as the next monetization path, via transactions rather than seats alone. Usage is wide. Wallets stay closed. For now.
